There is a flurry of news in the media about Google’s acquisition of Motorola Mobility. According to Fritz Nelson in InformationWeek ”…. this is all about the patents“. Motorola estimates it has 17,000 patents and about 7,000 pending approval. With this acquisition, Google enters the mobile hardware space competing directly with its own Nexus brand (that is due for an upgrade in Dec) and other partner vendors like HTC, Samsung. Google’s Andy Rubin said, “We expect that this combination will enable us to break new ground for the Android ecosystem. However, our vision for Android is unchanged and Google remains firmly committed to Android as an open platform and a vibrant open source community. We will continue to work with all of our valued Android partners to develop and distribute innovative Android-powered devices.”
